New Alliance communities sound the call

Posted on Apr 05, 2019

Alliance communities--groups formed around a specific issue or concern--are a vital part of the work of the Alliance of Baptists. A number of communities focused on a diversity of topics already exist, and members are always encouraged to form new ones whenever they feel called.

This year three new communities are being birthed, and organizers are inviting all who feel inclined to join them in their efforts.

Accompanying asylum-seekers at our border

Posted on Mar 15, 2019

Seeking asylum when facing persecution and torture is a human right backed by international and national law, including the 1951 Refugee Commission ratified by the United States in 1968. Recently, I volunteered with local organizations at the San Diego/Tijuana, Mexico border, drawn to witness the pursuit of asylum by the "caravans" from Central America.

As a Spanish-speaking pastor I was told I could best serve in two capacities in Tijuana: providing pastoral care to asylum-seekers and advocating for them within the city.

A journey of hope and longing

Posted on Feb 28, 2019

Dear Alliance of Baptists,

Last December I traveled to Bethlehem to participate in the Kairos Palestine gathering. This was truly an advent journey of hope and longing as I listened and learned from Palestinian Christians who continue to await (and manifest) God’s redemptive work in their land. Inspired by their witness, representatives of the global Christian community strategized together how we can be Incarnation – God in human form – for one another.

In an effort designed to contribute "to greening our world," Lakeshore Avenue Baptist Church in Oakland, Calif., has launched a crowdfunding campaign to solarize its building.

The church, an Alliance of Baptists congregational partner, has joined with RE-volv 'Solar Champions' to raise $40,000 for the 19.5 kW solar array it needs. Once in place it will save the church more than $143,000 during the lifetime of the system and stop more than 1 million pounds of CO2  from being emitted into the atmosphere.

Prime time to make a difference

Posted on Nov 01, 2018

Working for a seminary gives me several perks. I worship regularly with peers and colleagues fine-tuning their skills for ministry. I hear call story after call story of ways in which God is moving and good things are happening in the kin-dom at hand. I also have access to a network of people who discuss the many ways we can give to nonprofit institutions to ensure their financial future.

Although it's true some things have changed, it's also true an easy and beneficial way to give to nonprofits has stayed the same. Specifically, I'm talking about contributing appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual funds.
