Cathy McGaughey comes from a family chock full of moderate Baptists, and has spent most of her adult life doing administrative and bookkeeping related work for non-profit organizations. After 17 years at Oakhurst Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia, Cathy and her partner of 14 years, Diane Ansley, decided to move to the mountains of Western North Carolina 4 years ago. They love living in rural NC, in the middle of nowhere, with 6 cats and 1 Tazmanian devil, aka Jack Russell terrier named Cubby (for the Chicago Cubs). If they had more land, they would surely have a bunch more dogs, says Cathy. (Diane says that is debatable.) They are part of a recent lawsuit attempting to overturn North Carolina's ban on marriage equality. They live in hope that one day they will be able to be married in the UCC sanctuary where they now worship, the same sanctuary Cathy's parents were married 63 years ago. Their 24 year old daughter, Molly, lives in Charleston, where she hopes to begin graduate work soon.
