Alliance of Baptists’ History Published: Reimagining Zion, by Andrew Gardner

WASHINGTON—The Alliance of Baptists is pleased to announce the release of its newest history, Reimagining Zion, by Andrew Gardner. The book published by Nurturing Faith, Inc., is available for $20 on the Alliance of Baptists’ website.

Reimagining Zion— a three-part compilation: Leaving Zion, Reimagining Zion and Living Zion — tells of the earliest days of leaving the Southern Baptist Convention, the formation of the Alliance covenant and core principles, and case studies of eight Alliance of Baptists’ congregational partners.

Bill Leonard, professor of Baptist studies and church history at Wake Forest School of Divinity, credits Gardner with perceptive portrayal of the movement’s founding with his concluding sentence: “‘Perhaps Zion is wherever the people of God reside.”

“That single sentence portrays the Alliance story insightfully. … The courage present in the movement’s beginnings endures in concerns for peace and justice; racial, sexual and gender equality; creation care, and mission engagement,” Leonard said.

Paula Dempsey, director for partnership relations for the Alliance, said, “Andrew Gardner’s telling of the evolvement of the Alliance of Baptists helps us understand how it was divine inspiration that birthed our beginnings. … Read and celebrate with us!”

The featured partner congregations are First Baptist Church, Greenville, S.C.; Glendale Baptist Church, Nashville; Ginter Park Baptist Church, Richmond, Va.; Woodbrook Baptist Church, Baltimore; Oakhurst Baptist Church, Decatur, Ga.; Metro Baptist Church, New York; Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, Raleigh, N.C.; and Lakeshore Avenue Baptist Church, Oakland, Calif.
