Pastor—Metro Baptist Church, New York City
- Posted On:01/30/2014
Metro Baptist Church of New York City seeks a pastor with strong preaching skills, who can provide pastoral care in an urban setting. As pastor, you will be part of Metro's team management structure. You must share Metro's passion for community ministries, and for the diverse community that makes Metro a unique congregation.
You will be part of a team with a pastor who is primarily responsible for managing Metro's community ministries program: Rauschenbusch Metro Ministries. Metro's pastors are our only full-time paid staff, and they must work together, and with Metro's congregation and part-time staff to deal with the expected, and unexpected, challenges that arise daily.
Your sermons must speak to the needs of a diverse congregation. On any given Sunday, there will be people in the sanctuary with advanced and professional degrees, and people who are currently living on the street or in shelters. Metro's members are broadly diverse in terms of race, national origin, economic status, education, sexual orientation, and religious background.
Metro has a long tradition of creative worship. You will have assistance from Metro's congregation in planning and conducting the worship service, but you will have to work to continue that sense of congregational involvement.
Metro's members are spread throughout the New York City Metropolitan Area, and have little free time; meeting with them requires creativity and flexibility, often much more than is required in a traditional suburban setting.
You will help supervise a staff of part-time employees, most of whom have come to Metro for a limited time, often as part of an internship. Metro relies heavily on these modern-day missionaries; you will have an educational role in supervising their development. In addition, you will be involved in supervising Metro's broader educational efforts; groups come to Metro from across the country to learn about urban ministry.
You will be responsible for managing the operation and maintenance of Metro's buildings, which are over 100 years old. Although there is a custodian, you will often be the first person contacted about building-related issues.
Metro has long-standing relationships with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and the Alliance of Baptists. They have provided assistance to Metro, and continue to be a key part of Metro's programs. Metro is also affiliated with the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists, and the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America. You will need to help maintain all these relationships.
